Animals – at last! Valley View farm now has animals – 30 Chickens in fact. Our lovely ladies arrived a couple of weeks ago and are loving their free ranging lifestyle and their Chicken Coop Hot Wheels.
The chickens were purchased as pullets (ie at the point of lay) from Aaron, a local young person who raises chickens and sells them through Benalla Country Market. At the moment we have 7 that are laying regularly and another four just starting their laying careers. We plan to sell the free range eggs through local country markets In Yea, Violet Town, Benalla and Euroa.
In addition, to providing us with eggs to eat and sell, our lovely ladies are also helping us to regenerate our tired soil. Their scratching helps break up grass clumps and their free range grazing helps manage bugs and parasites. And their poop will help increase nitrogen in the soil and sweeten our compost.
Why a coop on wheels? Because our chickens will move around the farm. At the moment we have them working over next years garlic plot. In a couple of months, they will be following the cows as we strip graze them around the property. They will scratch cow dung helping it break down and release nutrients into the soil faster. They will also eat any parasites and bugs in the dung helping to keep our animals and farm disease free.
Andy is a little besotted by our ladies – and worries like a new father. Last night it was a bit gusty and he raced out in the wee hours of the morning to make sure the Chicken coop hot wheels hadn’t jumped the chock and started rolling down the valley.
Oscar (the dog) is a little jealous of the chickens and concerned that they are stealing too much of our attention. He has been getting lots of reassuring pats – as we stare hypnotised by our lovely ladies and their very funny chicken ways!
