Our farm has been unloved for many years and the soil is less than ideal. One of the ways that we plan to improve our soils is to use vermicompost and worm juice – at factory scale.
To this end, Andy and I have set about establishing two fridge worm factories – with another to be launched shortly. The fridge is ideal for our climate. The additional insulation protects our worms from our sub-zero winter nights and hot summers days with temperatures getting up to 40 degrees Celsius.
As principal worm farmer, I have been through a steep learning curve. I couldn’t have done it without my trusted copy of “Worm Farming: Made Simple” by Allen Windust. So far the fridge factories have been doing fantastic. We have active worm breeding occurring in both fridges throughout winter and good production of worm juice with enough to fertilise both veggie patch and garlic patch.
Special thanks to Andy as Worm Factory engineer – you’ve turned dreams into reality. Thanks also for sitting so patiently night after night, as I went on about worm happiness and breeding!
